Help my face…

I normally limit my vanity to matching accent colors between various parts of my bikes, but something’s been bugging me lately, and after much frustration with shopping on my own, I’ve decided to turn to my faithful readers for help. Though, most of you could stop reading now and not miss anything that you’re interested in. Hopefully, not all of you.

As of late, I’ve been noticing that my skin is starting to show signs of discontent and age. It’s dry, and I’ve got “smile lines” around my eyes. I’m not the type to be drug kicking and screaming into my next birthday- quite to the contrary, I’ve always said that I can’t wait until I’m older so I can be fast. However, that doesn’t mean that want to see it on my face if there’s a reletively easy way to prevent it.

My mom has gorgeous skin for her age (>50, <70), as does her mom. Unfortunately, I’ve not been blessed with either their genetics or their disdain for prolonged outdoor activity in extreme conditions. As a result, my mom’s skincare advice of “daily vasaline application” doesn’t really help. She also mentioned Oil of Olay. So, I looked at that stuff in the store. First off, it’s got the marketing prowess of bodybuilding supplements, which automatically sets off my BS detector. Second, I can’t pronounce most of the ingredients on the labels. Call me paranoid, but that makes me somewhat uneasy. Third- it’s expensive. Which, I honestly don’t mind too much about as long as I know I’m getting something that will actually “moisturize, reduce fine lines, and increase skin’s radiance” without causing some odd form of chemically-induced cancer by the time I’m 90.

With that being said, who can help? Ladies- any of you have a favorite? Men- anyone’s girl/wife got something she swears by? Comment away.

  1. I was always told that you can’t moisturize until you exfoliate first. Maybe try a facial at a nice spa first just for hints? Then ask em what you can buy at the store instead of ordering ‘their product’. Don’t forget that sunscreen, I think that is the biggest in preventing any further wrinkles-that is were I splurge and spend the money for the good stuff. Keep us posted with what you do;)

  2. Try Barlean’s Omega Swirl flaxseed oil….ya kneed more omega-3….down yer throat, not on yer face….;-)

  3. +1 on exfoliation is what I’ve heard too. But the best cure is prevention… you spend a lot of time squinting in the sun, you are gonna get crow’s feet.

  4. Don’t worry about it!

I’m sure you have heard “Beauty is only skin deep”.

I like you just the way you are.

  5. I use Neutrogena daily moisturizer with the highest SPF I can find – it’s pretty cheap, and it’s good to have the built-in sunscreen if you forget to put any extra on before going for a ride.

  6. Exfoliating is necessary in that it removes the dead skin cells and helps the moisturizers etc.. to soak in better. Also, the new skin will look and feel better. St. Ives is inexpensive and readily available. You also can create your own with brown sugar, coffee. Don’t rub hard, go lightly and a bit longer . Sunscreen is the most important item for face and the bod. As mentioned above, Neutrogena makes some good ones. After sunscreen i deem eye cream the next priority and that is where i spend my money. Neutrogena , ROC are good brands and have many options. I am a product junkie.

  7. From osmosis, my twin sisters have given me knowledge of such things that have never proven helpful until maybe now. First, drink lots of apple juice. Apple juice is a base and can help equalize your body’s PH. Second, skin cells will soak up H2O from a good 20 min shower. Exfoliating as others have said is great AFTER you wash. Make sure you use a moisturizer after showers to help retain the H2O the cells took in. Aveeno Ultra-Calming Moisturizer is excellent. I sometimes use it after I shave and its nice since it doesn’t have much of a smell or lingering perfume. I’m not really into Fumes.
