Jet9 Update

Just got a text message from Karen @ Bikes Plus- my Jet9 frame is set to ship from Niner on Monday next week! Woohoo!

I am wrapping up the decisions on the build up. It’s prettymuch gonna be SRAM-ed out:

Rock Shox Reba Fork
SRAM X0/x9 DRs & shifters (jury is still out on whether I want grip shift or trigger)
Truvativ Noir Crank (2 chainrings/bash guard)
Avid hydraulic brakes
Tires? Not sure yet. They’ll be set up tubeless, though.
Wheels- probably some hand-builts from lacemine29.com

Talk about your champagne taste on a beer budget! It’s gonna be a work in progress as I gather the necessary funds, but it will be absolutely perfect when I’m finished!

  1. The Jet9 will serve you well. Mike at lacemine29 builds a great wheelset, both of my sets are built by him. As a roadie, I think you’d like the triggers better than grip shift. I run SRAM Rival on my road bike and XO on my MTB. Tires for Colorado – Maxxis Ignitor out back, Maxxis Ardent up front. You’ll get grip and speed suitable to most conditions there and they convert to tubeless pretty well.

  2. Tigger all the way, no grip shift. I have seen some FSA cranks online very cheap.

  3. Niner says you gotza run a Shimano front dr, grip shift is so 1994, and go with mt kings for the rubber, tubeless of course.

  4. enjoy that tubeless…until you don’t so much anymore. laughed at all the spewing Stan’s at Ouachita. makes a nice white mess when you have to finally throw a tube in. trust me, i’ve been that tubless guy, not anymore.

  5. Welcome to the dirt, Andrea. I have an FSA V-Drive crankset that I took off of a new bike, if you are interested. I’d like $90 for it. The crank arms are 170 mm, and the chainrings are 44/32/22. You may want to consider having a granny gear. There are some things that you just won’t be able to ride without it. Also, X-9 works just as well as X-0, but X-9 is more durable. For me, the small weight difference wasn’t enough to justify the cost. +1 for the trigger shifters. I think tubeless is an expensive fad. I have never had a problem with tubes, but I run the regular tubes, not super lite. I have an appropriate tire pressure for my weight, I use a tire that is intended for the conditions I am riding in, and I try to pick good lines. People who complain of flats all the time are ususally running over things that they could just as easily go around. I am excited for you getting your new bike. I hope you will do some mtb racing.

  6. Thanks for the offer! I actually just got my order squared away at the bike shop… it’s going to be an epic-worthy bike for sure.
